1-11-20 Trip Report: Okefenokee Swamp

Birders,
We had a good turnout with the combined folks from Duval Audubon. We had as many birders as species seen-33. A planned burn near the boardwalk suppressed the number of species observed. Despite that we saw 7 species of the Woodpecker family including Red-headed and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. We had 2 of each and attached is a photo taken by Richard Timm of the Red-headed. The two Red-cockadeds were too skittish for photos. Also attached is a photo taken by Dan Kossmann of a Sharp-shinned Hawk. We tried for a photo of an out of season Eastern Kingbird but the bird would have none of it. Many American Robins, Cedar Waxwings and Brown-headed Nuthatches were also seen.
Duval Audubon is hosting a field trip this Saturday at Huguenot meeting outside the entrance at 8am. I will co-lead the trip and invite all of you to join us. Otherwise, a number of you expressed interest in an afternoon walk on the beach from North Beach to Fort Clinch Thursday January 23rd at 4pm. More on that later.
