Trip Report: Huguenot Memorial Park 12-12-20

Thanks to all that came out for our field trip to Huguenot. We lost a few of you after hearing reports of a Right Whale and Calf at access 13 on Amelia Island. Nevertheless, many of us were able to see the whales following the bird trip. As to the bird trip we were fortunate to have Jolie the park naturalist to guide us on the service roads that are not open to the public. In total we observed 45 species and we did not bird the ocean surf area due to time constraints. Of interest was observing both American Crows and Fish Crows in the same area identified by their calls. Other highlights include the Hooded Merganser, diving Brown Pelican, and the Wilson’s Plover. Due to distance we thought we had a Peregrine Falcon but a scope view proved it to be an American Kestrel. 

Our next field trip is January 9th at Kingsley Plantation but as part of the 121st Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, I will head up the Huguenot and KIngsley areas Sunday December 27, 2020. We will meet in the parking area outside Huguenot at 8am. Please email me if you would like to volunteer. Last year we were able to divide the group into 2 groups with Andrew Schuman taking the Kingsley area. Although he may be unable to do it this year if your associates wish to participate please let me know. I would appreciate those of you who would like to volunteer to email me.
