We had a good turnout for our field trip to Goffinsville and Holly Point last Saturday! A special, warm welcome to the two brand-new members who joined us out on the trails for the very first time—we are so incredibly glad you came out to bird with the group.
On the other hand, we had a poor showing of woodland birds. The north winds never help when it comes to birding but, despite those conditions, our group of 16 participants still managed to observe over 40 species!
During our walk, each participant requested to look for a specific target bird. While I can only recall half of those requests, we successfully spotted half of the ones I remember: Roseate Spoonbill, American White Pelican, Pileated Woodpecker, and Bald Eagle.
Misses for the morning included the Cooper's Hawk, Cedar Waxwings, and Indigo Buntings.
Above is a photo captured by Kristin Herring during our walk of an incredibly pink Roseate Spoonbill!
Good birding, Bill George
🌅 Upcoming Field Trip, Nov 14: Wildlight (7:30 AM start) & more
Our next official club field trip is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, at the Wildlight Trails in Yulee (not too far from the YMCA at Wildlight).
Please note that we will be starting at 7:30 AM. This earlier start time is necessary to maximize our morning birding hours since we will have transitioned off Daylight Saving Time by then.
About 10 days before the trip, we will send out a fresh trip reminder with our universal gear checklist and Google Map link to the exact meetup spot.
Notes: An optional floating trip, most likely to St. Marks NWR, will be scheduled during the winter depending on weather and bird sightings.
When possible, detailed information for each outing will be emailed at least 10 days prior to the trip, along with updates on local rare bird sightings.
For destinations further out, trip reminder emails will include a designated meeting spot for members who wish to voluntarily arrange shared rides.
